Highmark Healthy Living

Thanks to Highmark Healthy Living Grant, Butler Catholic School has purchased Fitbit pedometers for all middle school students. The healthy living initiative not only allows students to keep track of the number of steps they’ve taken during the day, but helps establish a daily routine that enhances the concept of what a healthy lifestyle entails.

But even more important that tracking the number of steps taken, we are Butler Catholic School are also promoting intangible virtues of charity, responsibility, teamwork and commitment by “walking” to the places where our sponsored children reside; Chimbote, Peru, St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Nigeria and St. Joseph’s Orphanage in India. The fifth through eighth graders are in teams of four and record the number of steps taken during the day. The seventh grade student in each group tracks his/her teams and collectively the team records the number of steps taken to reach our sponsored children around the globe. While the students “just walking”, these intangible virtues are helping them to become “strong temples of the Holy Spirit” as stated in the Catechism.
